Transforming Landspeeder Done!

Well i have to say, this speeder was just a dream to paint. Don't you love it when everything goes right and you are just enjoying painting for what it is?

I plan on adding around about 4-5 more to my list, and maybe a couple of Storms.

Other than that ill just let the pics do the rest of the talking!

Tactical Squad Nox Complete!

Ok so after many nights thinking, i came up with an effective paint scheme for basing my Raven Guard. After basing with masonry sand I used the cork basing te chnique from the painting corps to add realistic looking rocks.

The base was then given a coat of Scorched Brown, followed by dry brush of Vallejo Desert Yellow, Vermin Brown and finally Bonewhite in small patches.

To Make the base pop i added GW razorwire along with GF9's Aird stactic grass.

I think overall, the mini's turned out quite well and im looking forward to getting into my scouts, as my next unit.

Since my last post got pushed off the FtW's homepage too quickly. Could i ask everyone to have a look at my 1K pt list...

Raven Guard List 1K - † Needs help †

So i've been thinking about my list lately, i'm fighting a 1K point battle in a couple of weeks, and want to be prepared for it.

Its just a friendly game so i didnt want to make it a tournament style list.

So here it is...

Any tweaks i can put in there? i have not played a game of 40K for quite some time. So i think the list would be a little bit off.

I'm also trying to play them fairly true to there fluff (lots of scouts, not much armor).

I have another tactical squad laying around that i could put in right away, as well as a Termi Assault squad. everything else id have to buy.

Id love to hear some feedback on the list

†Magnetizing a Land Speeder†

†What you Will Need†

4.75 mm rare earth magnets
3mm rare earth magnets
.2 or .3 mm Plasticard/sheet styrene
GreenStuff
Plastic Glue
Super Glue
Pin vice or Dremel
3 mm Drill bit
Hobby Knife
Patience

††††Typhoon/Landspeeder††††
OK to start off, Cut out and clean up your speeder kit. Once that is done i painted my interior rater than stuff around trying to get all the fiddly bits in the cockpit. Glue the guys down onto the base of the speeder along with the back of the seat's, and then glue the top of the speeder on.

Cut out the doors and trim the hinge off, take out your 4.75 mm magnets and Super Glue them in.

Now get your sides of the speeder and look at the inside of it there should be two little raised areas beside each side of the door, it is there that you want to cut out thin strips of plasticard and "build up" that area (marked in Purple) . First off Dry Fit your doors onto the side so you know how much to raise the column's by. It took me 3 strips on each to get the right height.

It does not matter if they are too thick pieces and are hanging off the side as you just trim them down to original column size anyhow. Now when both Door arcs are built up, measure across the door and cut out a piece so you can stick it across the doorway and onto the plasticarded area. Remember to trim and excess plasticard hanging over as you don't want any interfering with the backseat of the cockpit when you go to glue in the sides.

Now with you magnet's fitted to the doors, dry fit them. then dab some super glue on the end of your magnet and place it behind the plasticarded panel, make sure you do this step while the door is still dryfitted. The two magnets should line up automatically. once set in place chuck some more super glue on the magnet to give a strong hold. I took an extra measure by greenstuffing over the magnet and onto the plasticard.
(i didnt want to be rageing if it fell off while inside the speeder)

Glue the sides in.

And Finish Construction of the rest of it.

††††Tornado††††

Ok, for the Tornado variant you need your 3 mm magnets.

Drill out a hole in the center of the nose as show below.

†Make Sure the Polarity is Right in this step. Dry fit and test before gluing†

Take your weapon housing and Drill Out the Middle Glue in your Magnet, and do the same to the back of it.

Now all it takes is outfitting the Weapons with magnets, this is Pretty self explanatory and i wont go any further. The most important thing is common sense and always make sure you check the polarity of magnets before gluing anything down.

Phew!

What a hectic couple of days, Ive been painting like a madman over the past 2 weeks, and I've been really getting stuck into my Raven Guard. Ive fully magnetized my Devastators and they are just awaiting a coat of paint. Ive got my second pod in the wings. The weathering on my Drop Pod is almost complete, as well as the freehand/stencil/weathering on my Modular Whirlwind.

I really hope i can finish up this army quickly before the Wolves hit the stores (im a long time Wolf player). But at the moment I'm quite enjoying painting all my guys. Im also itching for a game, but do not want to play until its all painted.

I also won a Bet with my girlfriend that if i beat one of the Muse songs on expert in Rock Band, she would buy me something from GW. so naturally i payed my butt off and just managed to scrape through at the end of the song ( i was failing miserably all the way Through).

So i WON a Landspeeder!

And that's what I'm really happy about! Ive magnetized it all. It can switch between a Typhoon, Tornado or just a regular little ol' speeder.

I will post a tutorial on how to do this, just cause i can, as soon as i acquire some batteries for my camera.

† So what are your experiences with magnets is it a love hate relationship like i have?

Army Painter: RED MODE!

Ok,

My little Brother of 10 years of age wants to start an space marine army so naturally, like all 10 year old's he chooses Blood angels.

After about 10 minutes of showing him "Alternate" Chapters (still BA Successors tho)

He decided to go for Flesh Tearers. (He has good Taste)

Now, to stop him from doing to many steps, i made him watch the Army painter Spray video. And now I'm Particularly interested in the Blood Red Spray that they have.

He wants the Dark crimson red instead of the "preppy queer eye for the Astarte's guy" red.

Me not exactly being a pro on painting red, how would one darken the blood red spray down to a more of a red gore/ scab red colour?

Has any one got Experience with Army painter sprays? are they even any good?

FtW Round Table: Painting cool white

Ok I start out with a nice undercoat of Chaos Black. Make sure this is applied thinly to the mini/area.

Next I go over with couple of times with Shadow Grey, again making sure that these coats are the consistency of milk. Because we want as much detail as we can possibly have.

Right, You’ve done all that? Easy?

Good cause this is the part is where most people fall down so I’m going to highlight the key problems people have when painting white.

† They tend to go all goopy with the pain because they cannot achieve the right opacity, which is a shame when you’ve done all this prep work for the white and never capitalize on it

† Paint is too thin. I used to fall into this category, for me it is hard to get the right consistency with white. It’s really a harsh Mistress that does not let you get away with adding too little or to much water/paint-retarder.

† Brushstrokes. Also white tends to misbehave when painting with a hard bristled brush, especially when painting over a dark colour —yes I spell color that way.
And when the paint has been made too thin showing. All of this results in where you make a brushstroke, the base colour showing through.

Then give a 1-2 washes of Arsumen Blue to the recesses of the armour.

And Volia done :P

† - Ok i dont have a camera avaliable at the moment but will "aquire" one within the next couple of day, ill post them as soon as i can. so ive chucked in one of my WIP tactical marines that im working on ATM as some place holders. o.O

Simple Green? Not so Simple to find...

Ok, well we Australian war gamers have quite a dilemma on our hands.

You see it all starts from the reality that simple green is not so simple to find down under. Yes yes its really easy to get in the states or the UK, but in Aus you have to Garrote someone From ASIO just to find out where to find it.

You can go to various supermarkets, shops, random house's, black markets, biological testing facilities and still come out with nothing except for your feelings hurt by the sheer elusiveness of Simple Green.

Its enough pent up frustration to have you weeping like a blubbering Sook being picked on in Primary school.

And then I went into Bunnings, walked down the cleaning isle. And i fell to the floor like it was some religious experience Thoughts rushed over me.

This is how they went:

You mean i cant finally strip my old mini's now?

After 5 years of on and off searching i can finally take my ghastly paint jobs off my old Space Wolves and Tau?

I can Use this stuff while also being satisfied that it is biodegradable and steeped with a Non-toxic Aura?

Wait you mean i can spray this stuff in peoples eye and it will Irritate them?

But that's enough outta me.

So Run down to bunnings with $10 bucks. Go to the cleaning section and it should be there.
If you wanna go down there with about $20 bucks you can get a massive bottle of it on the cheap.

Product Review: Vallejo Paints

After some rather extensive tracking down of these paints i actually found some in Melbourne.

Finally, I've got some in my hot little hands.

And i have to say believe the hype on these little bottle's of pure opacity and WIN!

First of all its not like your standard GW/P3 flip up lids, they are eye dropper bottles. I've found it very easy to work out paint mixing ratio's with these bottles.

They also cost less than GW/Citadel paints and you get more paint for your money. Vallejo costing $5 AUD for 17ml and Citadel costing $6 AUD for 12ml.

But onto the paint.

First of all these are a lot thinner than GW paints. there not gloopy and can be applied to a mini straight out of the bottle. you really don't expect to get much out of one drop, but in actual fact you do.

Also the strength of pigment in Vallejo paints is just quite mind bending, seeing the paint's strength firsthand, its like having your brain smashed out with a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick.

I bought the Game colour "hot orange" and i must say it takes the GW version (fiery orange) out the back and gives it a good hiding, and a couple of good kicks in the teeth and stomach for good measure. then returns to the bar non chalantly and finishes up by having a couple of drinks.

They very much smell like tattoo ink, so I'm thinking that has to be good.

It the coverage is also very good with the orange covering black in just one coat.

They stock both Game/model colour lines, as well as P3 and Reaper paints. And have big packs of Greenstuff for $25 bucks too! :p

WIP Nox Veteran

Ok here is My WIP Veteran Sarge. I like how the white turned out on his arms and i especially like the flesh tone.And here is on of his Crux, taken in super macro mode. (still getting used to the proper ISO settings and the like.

Cant wait to get the full squad done, its been a blast.

Raven Guard Picking's

Well thanks to ++ FROM THE WARP ++ for there really informative article Plundered from WeeToySoldiers, Now i actually got my camera to behave and do what i tell it to for a change.

Ok this is my Raven Guard Sergeant, I was quite happy how the NMM turned out being my first try at it. also dont worry about the Templar cross on the thigh armour, i was just brushing up on freehand crosses.

I am a huge fan of Commander Y's Templar's and you can get a great cross tutorial here.

Took a lot of inspiration from them they may only be gaming quality for Comm. Y but i think they strike the right balance between quality and quantity.

I'm leaning toward the whole 5 man squad having 3 Thunderhammers and storm shields, alongside 2 Lighting claws so that way i get the benefit of mixed armour (3+ inv save) while also making them far more punchier in Close combat.

Basically I'm going for a "Pure" raven guard force based of the IA written many moons ago, with lots of scouts and many rapid response elements tied into the list, with a whirly thrown in there for good measure.

Thoughts?
